The Sideline Whisperer
PLAYOFFS!?!?

Say it in your best Jim Mora voice:

PLAYOFFS!?!?

Yup, it’s that time of year in the USA Rugby realm (almost there in U-19s), when the games really, really, really count. As in, you lose, you go home.

So, who from Florida is playing who and when, you might ask?

Well, the Sideline Whisperer is here to help.

No predictions here, obviously, as I have no clue about the out-of-state teams who are playing our Florida teams this weekend.

Men's D2 South Quarterfinals Charleston at Naples – This game, between two teams who met last year in the postseason, had the potential to be a good one. However, the Outlaws decided they wanted out of the contest, and won’t be traveling to SW Florida. Instead, the Hammerheads will automatically qualify for the South D2 Final Four, which they are hosting on April 27-28. Not sure exactly who they will play in the semifinals, so we’ll just have to wait and see on that. Naples will have had almost a month off between games, which won’t help, but homefield advantage is a wonderful thing.

Boca Raton at Atlanta Old White – The Buccaneers have a lengthy trip to a city that hasn’t been kind to them in the past, specifically when they were in D1 and playing both ATL sides. Old White did not lose a game in their qualifying campaign, although the strength of D2 in the Georgia/Carolinas can sometimes be a little deceiving. If Boca play up to their potential a big road win is not out of the question here, and will only have a 90-minute trip later this month for the Final Four as their reward. Other quarterfinals: Memphis at Chattanooga, Knoxville at Little Rock Men's D3 South Quarterfinals Charleston B at Palm Beach – The Charleston B side will travel south to face the Panthers, who won the Florida title with wins over Brevard and Gainesville last month. Palm Beach only lost one game during the regular season, against the Hogs, and will like their chances of knocking off off the Outlaws at home. If they can limit their mistakes, Palm Beach has a chance to book their trip to Naples in this one.

Brevard at Hilton Head – Old Red Eye have a lengthy trip to the coast of South Carolina, where they’ll face a Hilton Head side who didn’t lose a game during the regular season. Those of you who have been around for a few years might remember these two sides met in the 2010 playoffs in controversial fashion. The referee declared Brevard the winners in that game, despite the fact that Hilton Head had scored more points. Once tape had been reviewed, Hilton Head were given the victory. Hopefully Brevard can erase the memory of that mess and bring home a win back to the Sunshine State on Saturday evening.

Other quarterfinals: High Country at Montgomery, Huntsville at Charlotte B D1 Collegiate Men UCF and FSU will both play in the SIRC (Southern Independent Rugby Conference) Championships this weekend in Georgia, as they look for a place in the national Sweet 16. The Knights, who have owned the college rugby scene in Florida since back in the summer sevens season, will face Georgia Tech in one semifinal, while FSU will face Middle Tennessee State in the other. The winner of Sunday’s championship game will advance. You have to fancy the undefeated Knights to take care of business up north and continue their quest for a national title. D1 Collegiate Women UCF won the South title a couple of weeks ago and will face Virginia this Saturday in Annapolis, Maryland in the first round of the Sweet 16 national playoffs. If the Knights win that game, they will face the winner of Navy/Brown in the second round on Sunday. Regardless of what happens up north for either Knights team, what a season for the entire UCF rugby program.

D2 Collegiate Women FAU women ended up qualifying for the South Championships, but were just too banged up to send a squad up there. Well done to the Owls. High School Boys This weekend is the final week of the regular season in the Florida Cup Division, with two of the four playoff spots still up for grabs. Naples A and Trojans, the two undefeated teams, will face each other on Saturday, with the winner claiming the No. 1 seed, and the loser being the No. 2 seed in next week’s semifinals. Miami will host Daytona, with the winner securing a playoff spot and the loser likely out of the picture. However, should Orlando lose to Weston, there might be some interesting scenarios. Orlando are in with a win. In the Shield Division, No. 3 seed Boca Raton will travel to No. 2 Cape Pirates on the 20th, with the winner traveling to Naples B on the 27th in the championship game. Phew, I think that’s it. Please get out and support your Florida rugby sides this weekend if you can! Check RugbyFL.com for times and venues.
