Predictions for Saturday, February 9th, 2013

After three months of playing divisional matchups, it's time for the D2 divisions to spread their wings and play some crossover games starting this weekend. From what I hear through the grapevine, it appears that the Bay Area Pelicans have called it a season due to injuries, and will not be participating. What that means for everyone else, I'm not sure exactly, but the Pelis were in no danger of making the postseason, so let's not concern ourselves too much with them. Instead, let's focus on the task at hand - this Saturday. As to what happens after these crossover games, who the hell knows....

As always, feel free to email me at sidelinewhisperer@rugbyfl.com with your thoughts on this column. Division 2 Fort Lauderdale at Tampa Krewe - The Knights still have a shot at making the playoffs, although a very slim one. And after they probably lose this very difficult opening crossover matchup, they will have a long four-hour drive home to think about where things went wrong in 2012-13. Krewe should have the majority of their squad available for this one after some suspensions finished up, and while they aren't eligible for the postseason themselves, Tampa will surely enjoy trying to ensure that Fort Lauderdale and some other teams don't make the playoffs, either. Krewe 38, Fort Lauderdale 17 Miami Tridents at Orlando - Orlando are thick in the race for one of the top two spots, and will have to be very, very careful here against a Tridents team that is right on the edge of being in playoff contention. They aren't known as the best traveling team, though, so he result of this contest will depend heavily on what sort of squad travels up from Miami-Dade. I think the home side should be able to pull this one off in the end. Orlando 30, Tridents 20 Daytona at Boca Raton - This is an intriguing matchup, especially as I seem to remember Daytona knocking off the Bucs at the end of last season or the season before. Of course, this Boca team is likely a lot different than that one, and with a playoff spot a very real possibility, the Bucs will be determined not to lose this one and fall behind Orlando and Naples. Just like the game above, the margin of victory in this one could really depend on what Coconuts team travels. Boca Raton 25, Daytona 12 Division 3 Sarasota (2-3) at Palm Beach (4-0) - The Saracens showed me up last week by going on the road and beating Treasure Coast in very convincing fashion and thus will be holding their heads high heading to this matchup. Palm Beach is no Treasure Coast though, and will want to keep their record unblemished. An emailer informed me recently that the top four teams in D3 will progress to semifinals, the winners of which will qualify for the postseason, so Sarasota still clearly have a chance at advancing, and a win here would be huge. I don't think they'll pull it off, however. Palm Beach 33, Sarasota 15 Indian River (0-4) at Brevard County (4-1) - Gainesville put up 103 on the poor Indian River guys last month, and this one could be close to that. Not much more to say, really, except that the race for the top seed in D3 will be critical, as Palm Beach, Gainesville and Brevard will surely be looking to avoid each other in the semifinals. Brevard 86, Indian River 0 Last Week (2/2/13): 2-1 Overall: 34-14 (70.1%)
